funny a 'spiritual' folk song with biblical characters
would have religious connotations ??

Yul Brenner wasn't really the king of Siam
it was just the part he played-

they sang cowboy songs
yet never herded cattle
never hurt one neither

-paws claws from the original 1929 lyrics
here are some lyrics not used by GD-
from original lyrics ;

Sampson burned down a field of corn,
They looked for Sampson but he was gone.
So many thousands they formed a plot,
It was not many days before he was caught.
Sampson was a man very large in size,
They overpowered Samson and plucked out his eyes.
O Church, just listen to the tale,
They caught poor Sampson and put him in jail.

Church, let me tell you what the Philistines done,
They brought Sampson to the building to have some fun.
But now, O Church, ain’t you glad
To hear what Sampson said to the lad,

These was the words that Sampson said,
Show me a pillar for to lean my head.
We are told that the building was high from the ground,
Sampson braced against the pillar and it tumbled down.

I think the GD got condensed lyrics from the Staples Singers
LP put out in 65'

Too hot for you, Uncle Fudd?
Down from the Rio Grande
Oh where the west is wild all around the borderland
I'm a pioneer who began from scratch
I don't bat an eye in a shootin' match.
They don't call me Elmer, they call me Satch.
Yippie yi yo kayah
Yippie yi yo kayah

Get along little horsy
Get along little horsy
Yippie yi yo kayah, oHey Jim, you better get out the rig,

All the way from Philadelphia
On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe

Oh, I'm packin' my grip and I'm leavin' today
'Cause I'm takin' a trip, California way
I'm gonna settle down and never more roam
And make the San Fernando Valley my home

I'll forget my sins, yes, yes, I'll be makin' new friends
Where the West begins and the sunset ends
'Cause I've decided where yours truly really oughta be
And it's the San Fernando Valley for me

I'm an old cowhand from the Rio Grande
But my legs ain't bowed and my cheeks ain't tanned
I'm a cowboy who never saw a cow
Never roped a steer cause I don't know how
Sure ain't a fixing to start in now
Yippee yi yo kay yay
