The junk yard I go by often has dragged out two VW vans and put them out front. They look as if they might crumble if touched but my thumb almost automatically went up.
Rember when seeing a van meant you almost certainly had a ride?

it meant you had a ride and some eventual good exercise pushing said van to the shoulder due to certain overheated radiator issues lol

classic VW vans had no radiator...air cooled, horizontally opposed 4 cylinder,...if you had the right model it was actually the Porsche 1600 cc engibe

Never had an engine problem while riding in a van. Often my ride would take me 50 miles without mechanical incident.
The worst thing that ever happened to me in a van was incidental to the van. Just as I was getting me out they gave me a hit of some smoke. As the van drove down the road I realized that it was the best 'one-hit' I ever had. I pulled a leg muscle trying to run fast enough to reach the van for a second.
They got away.

Funny you say that. My neighbor has a newer version, all campered up and fancy. He still seems to spend 4 or 5 hours a day working on it. Today he was hard at work on it, I ask what's up? Bad thermostat, over heated on the way home from the mountains.
