Hunter and I travelled from CA to D.C. to watch Obama's Inauguration. We stood in the very cold historic day for 5 hours (after 3 hours getting from VA to DC) but were THRILLED! We watched from The Mall, at 12 Street, about 2/3 of the distance from The Capitol to the Washington Monument. There are two h.264 video files here -- both the same video. You can toggle between SD and HD qualities inside the video player.

I'm about to sell, with some sadness, my 1978 Honda CB400A "Hondamatic" motorcycle. I have one last problem with it -- that's been baffling me for over a year. When I consolidated the speedometer and "idiot lights" to a svelte new cafe racer style chrome LED-based single instrument, I found that its neutral light was always on , no matter what gear. So I finally figured out a clever (if I may say so) way through research to use the "proverbial $7 part" from...

Time Lapse from day of 2010 Internet Archive holiday party (at 300 Funston Ave, SF). This is our relatively new and interesting downstairs workspace where we have open work "pods" as well as little niches and couch areas for discussions and collaboration. Fun notes: You can see a large clock with spinning hands in the upper right corner! This is my longest time lapse ever -- over 8 hours recorded! There is model train set in the left area on a table that you *may* be able to see...

Time-Lapse of us finally moving into and wiring up our massively updated downstairs media room, playfully named "Hyperspace". Moko Type Cover for iPad Mini review Moko Key Remappings for linux/unix Geeks I use iSSH app to ssh in to my work to ubuntu unix/linux and run emacs. I've found it invaluable to remap some keys, for example: CTRL-up ==> scroll-down CTRL-left ==> beginning-of-buffer and so on. On terminal with bash w/ the keyboard in use, "showkey -a" is your friend! You can then find any tricky key combo you want to remap. My 1978 honda "hondamatic" CB400A cafe racer modified bike project. The "A" is for automatic (a clutch-less 2 speed "low" and "high" geared bike), so I named her "decaf". My first/primary goal is to remove the ridiculously large/lame instrument section into a single smaller combined speedo/odometer/"idiot lights" chrome single instrument, and relocate the key/ignition. For me, this is kinda ambitious! But fun to learn and customize...

Our house remodel project hits its high point, fully opening up our nearly 24' x 24' top floor area into a single large space for the first time -- thanks to a massive (glulam) beam that VRGC and his amazing team put up and made look easy! In the far left you can see the unique 7-sided "heptagon" new entryway 8-) THANK YOU! This is a short video demonstrating the " php-htm-mode " code editing in emacs for when there are multiple coding languages in the file in question. The mode is tailored to intermixed PHP, HTML, JavaScript, and CSS. It can be forked and extended to other languages. This is much more readable playing the "HD" option and in fullscreen mode! (due to unusual width/height of the source video screen capture.) screen shots

Saving my 1978 Honda CB400A "Decaf" bike from a near fatal blow -- lower gasket blowout and huge oil leak ! (like, dumped a quart+ of oil in minutes while riding fast on highway at high temps). It was inadvertently overfilled with oil (my bad) and driven too hard (twin brother's not so good) combination that killed the Beast! Work with my twin brother (a very gifted self-and-internets-taught car and motorcycle moonlighting mechanic!), I as assistant especially for the entire...

Star Wars re - remastered! What is wrong with this picture? (top is 2004 DVD; bottom is 1977 version DVD) (hints: added flying object; dewback; are those *roman soldiers*?!) Here's the problem: - you love Star Wars - you like high quality restored video and audio - you are a purist and didn't like the added computer graphics (CG) junk to the 2004 DVD box set version - you want the cleaned up video and audio, but without the baggage of those changes! (See the changes in the film side-by-side in...

Drake Saga Remix I had fun rearranging gops (Groups Of Pictures) from my 2007 video The Drake Saga and giving it a catchy bootie mashup audio track called Justice for Billie Jean A Group of Pictures is a concept for video compression. Each one is: a full frame (AKA "keyframe" or "I-frame") (kinda like a JPEG, etc.) of a video followed by partial frames (AKA "P-frames" and "B-frames") (imagine a bunch of smaller tiles that contain parts of the video for...

short time lapse of Cape Cod marsh with clouds moving over the waters. I used a digital Elph camera in timelapse mode which produced a 640x480 15fps AVI. I sped that up by 4x to 60fps using mencoder to make it more dramatic. Real clock time during the shoot was about 30 minutes.

Things I see and hear on the prettiest part of my commute. Footage source is Motion-JPEG 640x480 30fps from Canon SD-300. I "vintaged" it (this is how I "see" the Presidio, after all) and cropped top and bottom to 16:9 ratio. What can I say -- I'm a sucker for film and the miniDV and HDV stuff isn't my bag.

some fun with new ffmpeg filtergraph features. I had wanted to make a fully lit (eg: sunny) video be more like a dimly lit and blurry video -- using just filtergraph time shifts and blends. My plan/hope was to make areas of motion blur, and make areas that remained the same seem untouched. it worked! 8-) Original source was a shot of WWDC 2013 taken by Hunter Lee Brown. Script/source code is below. The gist of the code is to fidget the source to 10 seconds in, slightly smaller, and rotated 90...

Time-lapse recording of drive from Lafayette, CA to Internet Archive in the Presidio, San Francisco, CA. About 6500 JPEGs were shot continuously at 2.4fps using the small (but mighty!) Canon SD-300 (and a tripod). I sampled 1000 images at equal intervals and created this motion-JPEG at 10fps using Cygwin mencoder. The "Motion JPEG" file is 640x480, 10fps. Having some fun in twisty turns in canyons in the hills near our house, with my 1978 Honda CB400a. Hunter and I were riding together -- this is footage from his helmet cam. I had just learned about 2 excellent turn techniques: (1) lift your butt up off the seat when you move into place towards hanging more off the side of the bike (instead of sliding across the seat) (2) move your head, arms, and shoulder far to the left or right of the windscreen/headlight area -- pretend like you can't see...

This was my first time lapse attempt. [9 Sep 2003] I'm a scientist, right? So let's experiment! I took pictures with my Sony VX2000 miniDV camera while tethered to a VAIO. It created proprietary DVF images which I converted with JVC JLIP tool to JPG. Then I used mencoder to create a 6-frames/sec Motion-JPEG AVI. Not super interesting (just my old place's living room) but fun to see where my evil all started...
