An homage? A coincidence? Either way, the similarity is remarkable. When I first saw this shot in Rogue One, I found it dramatic and powerful. Months later, I watched Macross: Do You Remember Love?, which Hideaki Anno worked on the animation for, and was shocked to see the same shot. Also was impressed that the idea was first done in 1984. Check out my regular Hideaki Anno cinematography analysis on Instagram: https://instagram.com/annocinema https://twitter.com/annocinema Me:...

From a bunker in Nurensdorf, on the outskirts of Zürich, to the main stage of Wacken Open Air festival Thomas Gabriel Fischer has lived through the highs and lows of heavy metal. Like many of the most important figures to emerge in the foggier, drearier strains of grunge, metal, and post-rock, Dylan Carlson is a Seattle native. In the late ’80s, Carlson founded the band Earth, which first achieved a surge of recognition with its 1992 debut album for Sub Pop, Earth 2. Carlson's work with Earth in the ’90s helped define and establish the drone style of rock, which slowed down the fury of metal and married it with the tonal interests of minimalism. As the mastermind...

With his signature warm baritone voice and tension-building keyboard riffs, Leroy Burgess contributed to the success of many different projects over more than three decades – with Black Ivory, Aleem, Fonda Rae, Intrigue and Inner Life, and as Conversion and Logg amongst other pseudonyms. Whether disco-boogie or Salsoul, the underlying ingredient is always pure soul, and the minute it touches your ears, you're transported to another place. In his lecture at the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy,...

Om'mas Keith, Taz Arnold and Shafiq Husayn are a super-producing unit unlike any other. Each member learnt the ropes in various corners of the industry – carrying records for Jazzy Jay and Bambaataa, making hits for Ice T and Dr. Dre – before coming together in 2000. It was then that Taz and Shafiq called Om'mas and convinced him to join them in Los Angeles so they could make something happen for themselves. The result was Sa-Ra Creative Partners and it soon became the hip-hop industry's...

Tony Dawsey is the guy that people like DJ Premier and Jay-Z (and many, many others) have looked to when they need perfect sound for their records. You could spend hours with this super-humble New York engineer, talking about frequencies, analog versus digital, half-inch tapes and studio monitors, and trying to catch any possible secret of mastering. But through his sharp and on-point answers in this lecture at the 2004 Red Bull Music Academy, you’ll mostly find out that mastering is not a...

Michaela Melián grew up the classical way, playing in orchestras from a young age. During art college she was asked to found Freiwillige Selbstkontrolle with fellow art fanzine contributors, and she immediately swapped her cello for the bass guitar. F.S.K. have always been the punk band's punk band, in spirit if not in style, with an against-the-grain ethos that means they're likely to change shape just when you think you have a grip on them. Never one to respect convention, let alone...

The man behind the project of the same name, Steve Spacek grew up in the churches and raves of South London. In this talk at RBMA Seattle 2005, he details the many different influences that went into the pioneering sound of his band, Spacek, talking at length about the creative process. To him, the music and the vibe are more important than the song, with the voice being little more than another instrument. We also hear about the importance of having the right bass and the right face and he...

The Arabian Prince has been making robots shake their shit since the early ’80s, producing his own tracks and playing live shows with The Egyptian Lover, World Class Wreckin’ Cru and the LA Dream Team. It was his early electro rap experiments which got him some serious attention and respect from his LA contemporaries, and soon his innovation in the studio and dedication to the party led to him working with N.W.A. alongside Dr Dre. In this session at the 2005 Red Bull Music Academy, Brother...

UK-born, Berlin-based Ewan Pearson has been turbo-boosting dancefloors since 1996. In that time he wrote a book and released a gaggle of challenging tracks. Pearson’s productions surprise even the most jaded ears - like the man, they’re offbeat, but on point, with a charmingly unpretentious disposition. He’s also put his addictive techno-pop touch to remixes for Pet Shop Boys, Goldfrapp, Erlend Øye, and Depeche Mode (among many others), and even produced albums for Tracey Thorn and The...

Having stepped out on labels like Itiswhatitis, Perlon, and his own Wagon Repair, New Zealand born Canadian prodigy Mathew Jonson has stomped loudly yet elegantly through the world of techno. A piano and percussion maestro from a young age, he combines musicality with proper, hands-on, analog outboard action. Gilles Peterson and Laurent Garnier are just two of those who've said "yes" to Mathew Jonson's mutability. In this talk at the 2005 RBMA in Seattle, Mathew explains his studio...

It sounds somewhat like a modern fairy tale. A seven-piece band called Fat Freddy’s Drop, out of Wellington, New Zealand, starts off playing local gigs and builds a solid fan base. They record an album in their own studio, distribute it privately and go double platinum in their native country. Racking up several awards for their debut effort, including 2005 Album Of The Year at the Worldwide Music Awards, FFD embarks on a worldwide tour. This the stuff of any musician’s dreams, all the...

Unlike most other drum & bass producers, DJ Zinc is a man of many hats producing tunes at various tempos. His first non-drum & bass track, the now infamous "138 Trek," was played by UK garage kids, as well as breaks and broken beat DJs, breaking into the top 30 and eventually leading to opening his own label, Bingo Beats. In this talk at the 2005 RBMA in Seattle, Zinc explains his early beginnings and involvement in the seminal production outfit Ganja Kru, the importance of...

Brian Cross first encountered hip-hop in the early '80s, a meeting that sealed a lifelong love affair between the music, the culture and the young Irish photographer. Cross eventually moved to Los Angeles for post-graduate studies. One of his professors was the influential author of City Of Quartz, Mike Davies. Davies encouraged Brian to combine his love of hip-hop culture, photography and politics. This led to It's Not About A Salary - Rap And Resistance In L.A., one of the earliest published...

Since 1993, San Francisco-based Ubiquity and its sister labels Luv'n Haight and CuBop have been responsible for quality releases through a wide range of genres from old school jazz and funk to modern electronic music of almost virtually any style. One of the people responsible for his, as head of A&R for Ubiquity's cutting repertoire, is London-native Andrew Jervis, who at a whim moved to the Bay Area 15 years ago and got involved in the Ubiquity empire since the day he got there. Sit down...
